I’m David Bedrick, a teacher, author, and psychological activist helping you live a life free from shame.

For over 30 years, I’ve supported my students in reconnecting with the wisdom, power, and intelligence of their whole and authentic selves by releasing the grip shame has over their lives.

I founded the Santa Fe Institute for Shame-Based Studies to teach therapists, coaches, and healers how to liberate shame from the body and mind. Along with my books and online courses, I’ve assisted thousands of people like you in addressing shame at the root & dismantling its power to strangle your life force.

If you desire to liberate yourself from shame’s prison and follow your own unique path in the world, here are the best ways to engage with UnShaming:

I’m proud to say that UnShaming is one of the most revolutionary and fast-working techniques available to help you understand the true value and gifts you have to share.

Over the past 30+ years, I have researched shame and visionary activism, studied Jungian psychology, taught psychology and philosophy at the collegiate level, written 3 books, and impacted hundreds of thousands of lives. In that time, I’ve found that most teachers of shame overlook one vital aspect of healing:

Your deepest difficulties are not meant to be ignored or exiled, they are here to help you become yourself.

I weave this connection- and empathy-based understanding of shame into all the work I do.

I created UnShaming to be a radically loving path to healing that regards every part of you with gentle curiosity & fierce compassion

Here, we acknowledge that your thoughts, beliefs, problems, traumas, body, and dreams are brilliant and beautiful expressions of your soul.

We harness the wisdom and vitality of your truest self to bring you into deeper alignment with your purpose.

My UnShaming journey began while healing my own childhood trauma.

I grew up in a violent and oppressive home. My father’s brutality was physical and verbal, but the denial and dismissal by my mother has its own covert power.

Because I didn’t have a loving witness during my childhood – someone who saw, named, or acted to protect and care for my injuries – I didn’t learn how to create a sense of safety and security within myself.

Within my private practice and my classroom as a teacher of psychology, I saw this reflected back to me. I met thousands of people who were caught in the painful traps of trying to “heal” themselves based on the belief that something was wrong with them.

I knew there had to be a better way – one that could be more loving, powerful, and healing.

So I developed UnShaming, a radical approach to alleviating the pain of all manner of physical and emotional difficulties, including addiction, trauma, and abuse.

I founded the Santa Fe Institute for Shame-Based Studies to teach therapists, coaches, and healers how to facilitate therapeutic healing with their clients through UnShaming interventions.

UnShaming has transformed what I once saw as “problems” into gifts, allies, and sources of wisdom.

  • What I once saw as insecurity, I now see as a capacity to be more vulnerable and acutely aware of my need for more fluid boundaries.

  • What I once saw as anger, I now see as a fire of passion and intensity that carves a path for my voice to be more empowered and free.

  • What I once saw as resentment in my relationships, I now see as deeper needs and desires that are needing expression and support

  • What I once saw as criticalness and judgment, I now see as an impulse to develop finer theories and methods for understanding the human condition as well as the urge to write and communicate those theories.

  • What I once saw as flaws, errors, and derailments, I now see as the spirit of my own intelligence, guiding me toward a more authentic life.

UnShaming has created within me an unswerving capacity to look into the eye of others’ tornadoes of manifest horrors, from sexual violence to the wounds of war.

It has allowed me to face my experiences with profound acceptance and compassionate tending.

This, too, is what it provides for my students.

It will expand your consciousness, self-love, and self-awareness as you venture onto your most meaningful, soulful path.

What will UnShaming unfold within you?

I hope to find out.

With love,

David

My main credential is my own UnShaming journey, but if you want to know more about my full range of experience and expertise…

  • I am currently in the process of writing my fourth book, UnShamed, through North Atlantic Publishing

  • My previous three books are You Can’t Judge a Body by Its Cover, Revisioning Activism: Bringing Depth, Dialogue, and Diversity to Individual and Social Change, and Talking Back to Dr. Phil: Alternatives to Mainstream Psychology.

  • I’ve published over 90 articles in Psychology Today, HuffPost, The Advocate, and others

  • I graduated from the Process Work Institute and have been adjunct faculty there for over 15 years

  • I studied under Arny Mindell, the founder of process-oriented psychology. Mendel was a student of Carl Jung, who added perspectives of physics and the body into Jung’s work. I grafted my own work onto this lineage’s tree, adding perspectives of shame into Mendel’s work

  • I spent 8 years teaching psychology and philosophy courses at the University of Phoenix

  • I have a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Lewis and Clark Law School, where I graduated #1 in my class. During my time there, I won awards for service to my community. The state of Oregon honored me with an award for being the attorney with the most pro bono hours in the state. I considered it a privilege to have a law degree, and I helped anyone who came to me.

  • I ran a management consulting firm for 12 years, teaching management to hundreds of nonprofits and organizations including 3M, the US Navy, and women’s shelters

  • I’ve been working one on one with clients in my private practice for over 30 years

But my main credential is that I suffered like hell for 50 years, growing up in an abusive household and as a member of an oppressed group. UnShaming is how I found the intelligence in those experiences.

This is my path.
